This year I will be sharing a science fiction book I am reading on the first Friday of every month and invite you to read along! At the end of the month, I will open up a thread for us to unpack the prophetic lessons weaved in the narrative that are tickling our imaginations about who we could be and stroking our anxieties on who we are becoming.
Come along. I can’t wait to travel to other worlds with you. Stay tuned for our February book selection in the next two weeks. And feel free to send me recommendations.
I landed back home after a month away. Riding that jet lag life, and easing into 2022. Until I am back in full speed - below is a list of critical questions to contemplate as another cycle sets in motion. Rilke says to live the questions now, and I think that is pretty solid advice.
What colour hair will your avatar in the metaverse have?
How will you broach the conversation with your current family about your plans to have a second family in the metaverse?
What joy will you delight in that will only be yours - never to be documented or shared in a story or caption - and only known between you and your god?
Who will you text when you read the headline, ‘10 more years until billionaires end the world by eating it whole?’
Which Whatsapp group will you leave brazenly without so much as a goodbye?
Where is the steady tree that you will consensually visit and get to know all year located?
Which resolution are you already planning to gracefully bomb, and what song will lick the wound of annual, character-defining failure?
How might you be a little less Logan Roy, and a little more Greta Thunberg to bank a few extra years for the kids?
Who will be the person that you can respond to most messages with, ‘fucking capitalism’ and ‘nothing makes sense,’ and both not tire of this true, even if reductive, statement?
What high-tech gear will you splurge on to make you utterly invincible, even if only briefly and within your mind’s eye?
Which family member will you be kinder to for the thrill of throwing them off the balance of your deep seated dynamic?
What reason will you offer when you decide to permanently wear a 'mask’, literally or figuratively, post-pandemic, to avoid contact and small talk?
Which parallel universe will you go to when you decide to dissociate from this one and what will table manners consist of there?
How might you redirect a dull love to one that is sweeter and stickier? How will you thank love for the generous reorg?
If your soul was a mutable animal that lived on your shoulder, who would it be this year? Will it like what it sees?
Who will you argue with to be right for the fleeting satisfaction of delusional power? What topic might you fancy if vaccines, masks, testing and lockdown measures are off-limits?
At approximately what date in this new year of dazzling possibility will you stay awake until 4am bleary-eyed about who the fuck you are and how you got here?
Which person will you unabashedly follow, like and share everything they touch and utter to feel like you could be friends one day?
What might you share with the world that in your secret dreams lets you ride the 24-hour high of virality and visibility? Where will hide right after?
Which brand will you divest from to sleep a little sounder and have something to announce when dinner parties are back?
How will you look at someone you love with new eyes, and not through the memory of the time they cried about not being able to open a new jar of almond butter, had explosive diarrhea on a flight, or took our their rage on a gentle parking attendant?
How will you know it is all going to be okay because there is really no other decent choice?
